The use of Variable Frequency Drives has become widespread in most industries. While this certainly saves in energy costs, inherent in VFD’s is an electrostatic charge building up in the motor rotor. Left unchecked, this static charge will discharge to ground through the only path available – the bearings. This discharge, which actually micro welds or scars the bearings, is highly damaging and over time will significantly reduce bearing life. A simple way to mitigate the discharge is to use Motor Grounding Brushes which allow for a more direct path to ground for the static buildup.
